Digital Security Camera

I want to use the digital camera connected to my laptop as a security camera and can it be done?

I tried to try to get some pictures of the wildlife outside my house before. It is possible, but you need good lighting and your computer must be running all the time. You can use a software called Yawcam which is a motion activated webcam software. It can alert you when it detects motion in the camera. It does this by detecting change of pixels:

Enabled cameras are the best because you do not start recording until the system detects movement. If you save all the time, your hard drive fills up.
