MarketplaceFire Extinguisher Disposal Fire Tech: What is the best way to dispose of an old fire extinguisher? Do I just throw in the trash? Or are there specific measures to follow, as the elimination of medical syringes? Sorry if you think the class is off - the choices are not very applicable to my question. It depends on the type of exinguishing officer is inside. Someone had really old carbon tetrachloride inside, and are dangerous. If broken, can cause health risks to you and your family. Most newer exinguishers have a dry powder in them, or an ABC, BC or chemicals. Either one of these chemicals, while a little irritating to the skin, are relatively harmless. The common method of disposal is to discharge the extinguisher in a container for disposal (which is done to relieve the pressure if it does not go in the garbage truck reloaded). Then, once drained from the pressure, take the valve by unscrewing the bottle, usually counterclockwise. Before throwing in the trash barrel, we are now told that the cylinder must be destroyed by breaking or drilling holes in it. We have our local drug manufacturers to thank for that, using some of these in the manufacture of illicit drugs. If you have any doubts that the chemical is, it leads to a society of local extinction. Most will have free access. If you do not know, write me and I'll try to find a company near you. Old fire extinguishers may be thrown when they are depressed. However, if it still has useful life, consider donating. Check with the local FD opportunities. empty it and turn the fire station. They can complete and give to someone in need. Take a recycling station. Posted on June 3, 2010.
