When using a water extinguisher water extinguishers are useful for the most types of fires, those using materials such as paper, cloth, wood and other flammable materials common. They are not, however, be used for fires involving liquids cooking fires, and flammable gases. But for Class A fires, water is one of the best ways to extinguish them. There are several types of fire extinguisher, including those who work with a gas cartridge and others who use the water pressure.
Pressurized water extinguishers have been with us since the late 1800s. A type extinguisher soda / acid was developed in 1881 and uses the reaction of sulfuric acid and sodium bicarbonate to the heat of the water. A vial inside the extinguisher was filled with concentrated sulfuric acid, which was broken in a solution of baking soda. This forces the water from the tank and the fire hose.
However, modern fire extinguishers do not work like that. They use a cartridge that is attached to the cylinder, which is filled with gas under pressure - or the entire cylinder is pressurized. Their ability to fire class A cancellation is the same regardless of the design. If you use a water extinguisher, be sure to firmly hold the hose and directing water at the base of the fire. Do not use water extinguishers on electrical fires or a grease fire. May spread fire if a grease fire and, of course, is a risk of electrocution in the event of a fire of electrical origin.
Some extinguishers contain water as an additive with water. This may be another chemical that helps to extinguish fires. Potassium acetate is a common fire - which forms a crust on the fire which prevents it from spreading further. Detergents and other wetting agents are also used to help the water do its work. To prevent the combustion of other physical or chemical agents can be used, depending on the type of fire. An oil / water emulsion with a polymer is useful for fire type A and type K (kitchen) fire. The oil and water combine with the polymer to form a gel absorbs heat. These sprinkler work, no matter where in the fire, they are sprayed.
When using a water extinguisher, you must first remove the pin holding the trigger in place. Secondly, the objective of the extinguisher and make sure you have a good grip on the pipe. Step back eight to ten feet of the fire and pull the trigger to discharge the extinguisher. Sweep the spray water at the base of the fire.
Once you have set the fire, watching to make sure it does come on again. Even if an area appears not, do not walk on it. These areas are often still very hot and can raise. The sprinkler support with less risk than other types, just move the oxygen. If the fire does not turn off or you do not know if you can save yourself, leave immediately!
Water extinguishers can be obtained in different sizes - three, six and nine-liter sizes are all common. A large fire extinguisher, of course, is capable of putting on larger fires. Fire extinguishers in the United Kingdom which are water based are painted red signal flat with current stripe. In other countries, the color may vary. In the United States for example, water extinguishers are white or silver.
Your fire extinguisher should be serviced regularly to ensure it still has sufficient pressure. You must recharge a fire extinguisher that was used as soon as possible. These extinguishers should be kept in the kitchen, because they are not intended to grease fires or near electrical equipment. In areas where fire may occur if ordinary, such as near a fireplace, a water extinguisher is a good thing to have.
